3-ply vs 5-ply corrugated boxes: which should you buy?
Use 3-ply corrugated boxes for everyday e-commerce parcels under about 5 kg; choose 5-ply when the load is heavier, stacked, or travelling by air or sea freight.

What 3-ply and 5-ply actually mean
A 3-ply (single-wall) carton is two flat kraft liners with one fluted layer glued between them. A 5-ply (double-wall) carton adds a second flute and a third liner. The extra flute is what raises stacking strength and puncture resistance — not the printed colour or the brand name on the flap.
In India both grades are typically classified under HSN 4819 10 10 and attract 18% GST. The GST rate does not change with ply; only the board cost and freight weight do.
When 3-ply is the right buy
Most D2C and marketplace sellers should start with 3-ply. It is lighter, cheaper per piece, and enough for apparel, cosmetics, jewellery, phone cases, mithai trays and most products under 5 kg that are not stacked more than a few cartons high.

- Short domestic lanes (same city to neighbouring states)
- When you need the lowest per-piece cost at pack quantities of 100
When to step up to 5-ply
Buy 5-ply when a failed box costs more than the extra rupees: glass, ceramics, liquids, automotive spares, stacked warehouse storage, or export cartons that will be handled by multiple terminals.
- Loads above ~5 kg, or fragile contents that cannot flex
- Cartons stacked more than 4–5 high in a warehouse or tempo
- Air or sea export where cartons are palletised and restacked
- Monsoon lanes where cartons sit on a wet floor or under a tarp
