Amazon and Flipkart volumetric weight: how box size changes your fee

Amazon, Flipkart, Meesho and most Indian surface couriers charge the greater of actual weight and volumetric weight — length × width × height in centimetres divided by 5,000 — so a box two inches too big on each side can cost more than the carton itself.

The formula marketplaces actually use

Convert the outer carton to centimetres, multiply length × width × height, and divide by 5,000. That number is the volumetric kilogram. The marketplace bills whichever is higher: that figure or the scale weight. Air and some express products use 4,000 or 6,000 — always read the current rate card — but 5,000 is the surface default for FBM and most 3PL handovers.

PackWorks sizes are inner inches. Add about 0.25 inch per side on 3-ply (0.5 inch on 5-ply) before you convert to centimetres.

Worked example

A 400 g phone-case kit in a 12 × 10 × 8 inch outer carton is about 30.5 × 25.4 × 20.3 cm. Volumetric weight ≈ 3.1 kg. The same kit in an 8 × 6 × 4 inch 3-ply (about 20.3 × 15.2 × 10.2 cm) is ≈ 0.63 kg volumetric. You pay for 3.1 kg versus 0.63 kg — five times the air — even though the product never changed.

Amazon, Flipkart and Meesho in practice

Seller Central and Flipkart Seller Hub both show a dimensional-weight line on the fee preview. Meesho’s surface rate card uses the same greater-of-actual-or-volumetric rule. If you list one SKU in three box sizes, the fee will follow the carton you actually hand to the pickup agent — not the size in your listing photo.

  • Measure the closed outer carton, not the product
  • Do not ship a 12-inch cube because “it is what we have”
  • Keep two nearby stock sizes so peak SKUs do not overflow into a huge leftover carton
  • Print marketplace tape on the flap — it does not change the volumetric math

How to pick the PackWorks size

Enter the product’s L × W × H on the size finder. We rank stock cartons by unused volume and show pack price. Start with 3-ply for items under about 5 kg; step to 5-ply only when crush or monsoon stacking is the real risk. A tighter 3-ply almost always beats a loose 5-ply on marketplace fees.

FAQ

Questions this guide answers

Does Amazon use a different divisor than Delhivery?

Most FBM surface and Easy Ship lanes still use 5,000. Some air or heavy-bulky programmes differ — check the live rate card in Seller Central before a big size change.

Will a courier bag always be cheaper than a box?

For soft apparel, yes, because the bag adds almost no volume. For anything rigid, a fitted 3-ply mailer or RSC usually beats both a bag-plus-damage-rate and an oversized cube.

Do PackWorks prices include the marketplace fee?

No. Pack prices are the carton only, ex-GST. The volumetric fee is charged by Amazon, Flipkart or your courier on the shipment.
