Kraft vs white corrugated boxes: when to pay for white

Buy brown kraft when the carton is a shipper that will be taped, stacked and scuffed; pay for white (or a colour mailer) when the open box is photographed, sits on a shelf, or needs a crisp logo print.

What the colour actually is

“Kraft” means the outer liner keeps its natural brown fibre look. “White” means a bleached or white-top liner on the outside (and often inside). Strength comes from ply, flute and GSM — not from the brown or white tint. A white 3-ply is not stronger than a kraft 3-ply of the same board.

When kraft wins

Kraft is the default for Indian logistics: lower board cost, scuffs look intentional, and flexo logos still read fine for “Handle with care” marks. Use it for RSC shipping boxes, garment bulk cartons, 3PL standards and any parcel the customer will not unbox on camera.

  • Marketplace FBM shippers and returns-heavy SKUs
  • Export and warehouse cubes where tape and labels cover the face
  • Food shippers that sit under a retail sleeve or pouch
  • Any SKU where per-piece cost beats brand theatre

When white (or colour) wins

White is a print and photo surface. Logos sit cleaner, tissue and stickers look premium, and Instagram unboxing does not look like a wholesale carton. Colour mailers go further — solid brand colour with no print wait. Both cost more per piece than plain kraft of the same size.

Print note

Flexo on kraft prints warmer and slightly muted; on white it is closer to your artwork. If you are briefing a 500-piece logo run, approve a dieline on the same board colour you will buy in bulk — switching kraft→white later means a new visual match, not just a price change.

FAQ

Questions this guide answers

Is white board food-safe by default?

Food contact depends on the grade and any coating — not the colour name. For direct food, use the right food-grade pack; for outer shippers over sealed pouches, standard kraft or white cartons are normal.

Can I get the same size in kraft and white?

Many PackWorks mailer and shipping sizes run in both. Check the product page finish options, or order a sample of each before a print plate.

Are colour mailers the same as white board with ink?

No. Colour mailers use a solid-colour outer liner. You are buying a stock colourway, not a full-bleed print job.
