Monsoon packaging in India: keep corrugated boxes from failing

Corrugated board loses most of its stacking strength once it is wet — for Indian monsoon dispatch, use a snug carton, step up to 5-ply when boxes will be stacked or sit on a tempo floor, and keep a poly liner or courier bag between the kraft and the rain.

Why monsoon wrecks a normal carton

Kraft paper is a fibre mat. Water softens the flute, the vertical columns collapse, and a stack that was fine in April will pancake in July. The failure is usually the bottom carton on a wet floor or the top carton under a tarp that pools, not the product inside.

What to change in the rainy months

You rarely need a fully laminated “monsoon box” for domestic e-commerce. You need less air in the carton, a stronger wall when the lane is wet, and a cheap plastic barrier on the outside.

  • Fit: unused space lets the wet wall buckle. Use the size finder, not a leftover cube
  • Ply: 5-ply for stacks more than four high, glass, liquids, or part-truck loads
  • Wrap: one poly courier bag or a sheet liner over the closed carton before the tape
  • Tape: seal all seams, including the manufacturer’s joint, with 48 mm BOPP
  • Pallet: keep the bottom layer off the warehouse floor on a pallet or a dry sheet

3-ply vs 5-ply in the rains

3-ply is still correct for a single D2C parcel that a rider carries. It is the wrong choice for a 20-carton bundle that will sit in an open tempo from Karnal to a coastal city. 5-ply does not make the board waterproof — it gives you more dry strength after the first splash. Pair it with a bag or stretch wrap for the wet face.

What PackWorks will and will not claim

We do not sell a “100% waterproof corrugated box.” Board that is truly waterproof is a different material and a different price. We stock 3-ply and 5-ply kraft, poly courier bags, and packing tape so you can build a monsoon pack from parts you already reorder. Test one sample pack on your wettest lane before you change the whole SKU.

FAQ

Questions this guide answers

Will a colour mailer survive the monsoon better than brown kraft?

No. Colour is a liner tint, not a rain coating. Treat it like any 3-ply mailer: snug fit, bag it if the lane is wet.

Does extra tape waterproof a box?

Tape stops splash at the seams. It will not save a carton sitting in a puddle. Lift the stack and add a bag.

Can I get monsoon-grade 5-ply from PackWorks?

Yes — shop the 5-ply shipping boxes and add courier bags from the same cart. GST invoice covers both lines.
