Packing tape in India: BOPP width, microns and when printed tape helps

Most Indian e-commerce cartons seal fine with 48 mm (2-inch) BOPP tape; step up to 72 mm (3-inch) on heavy or dusty cubes, choose a micron grade that actually sticks on kraft, and use Amazon/Flipkart/Meesho printed rolls when the channel expects marked tape — not to reduce fees.

Width: 2 inch vs 3 inch

48 mm covers a standard RSC centre seam with one pass. 72 mm covers wider flaps and dusty export cubes with fewer passes. Tiny mailers do not need 3-inch tape — you waste money and fight wrinkles on the lid.

Microns and adhesive

Thicker film (higher microns) resists tear along the flap. Cheap thin tape looks fine on day one and peels in monsoon humidity. Brown and clear BOPP both work; brown hides dirt on kraft shippers. If tape lifts, clean dust from the board and use a proper dispenser tension — do not just add a third layer of weak tape.

Printed marketplace tape

Amazon, Flipkart, Flipkart Fragile and Meesho branded rolls help floor compliance and make opened cartons obvious. They do not change volumetric weight or ply strength. Use Fragile marking when the contents need handler care — not as decoration on apparel bags.

  • Seal the centre seam and both end seams on RSC
  • On monsoon lanes, tape the manufacturer’s joint if it looks dry
  • Pair with a snug carton — tape cannot save a loose wet stack

HSN reminder

BOPP packing tapes typically sit under HSN 3919 at 18% GST — a different line from corrugated 4819 on the same invoice. PackWorks itemises both.

FAQ

Questions this guide answers

Clear or brown?

Brown on kraft shippers; clear when you want the board or a label to show. Hold depends on adhesive and microns, not tint.

Can I tape a courier bag?

Bags already have a permanent strip. Extra tape is for reinforcing a damaged pouch — better to use a new bag.

How much tape per order should I cost?

Often 0.5–1.5 m per small RSC. Measure ten real packs and average — do not guess from the roll length alone.
