Electronics and fragile goods: 5-ply and insert checklist

For electronics and fragile goods, fix fit before ply — use a snug flat mailer for accessories, add wrap and corrugated pads where surfaces can scuff, and step up to 5-ply plus inserts when mass, glass or stacking makes crush the real risk.

Accessory vs device

Phone cases, cables and chargers usually want flat 3-ply mailers or shippers from about 4 × 3 × 2 to 10 × 7 × 2 inch — snug enough to skip most void fill. Glass screens, ceramic, cameras and anything with a high ASP need a real fragile protocol.

Fragile checklist

Work top to bottom. Do not jump to double-boxing if the inner carton is still half empty.

  • Measure device + retail packaging; pick inner size with ≤ ~1 in total play
  • Wrap abrasion-prone faces (bubble or foam sheet)
  • Add corrugated U-pad or layer pad at impact faces
  • Choose 5-ply if stacked, heavy, or monsoon surface lane
  • Tape all seams; Fragile tape only if handlers should see it
  • Bag the closed carton on wet lanes
  • Drop-test from waist height on two axes before scaling ads

Double-box when

The product already has a retail carton that must stay pristine, or the claim rate stays high after a snug single shipper. The outer RSC should be only slightly larger — huge outer boxes recreate rattle between shells.

Marketplace fees

Fragile packing that adds two inches of air can cost more than the insert. Wrap first, then re-measure for the size finder. A tight 5-ply often bills less than a loose 3-ply cube.
